Life Story of Akshu Fernando

Early Life and Character
Akshu Fernando was born in 1991 in Panadura, Sri Lanka. From a very young age, his life was shaped by discipline, humility, and an unwavering love for cricket. He possessed a rare balance of talent and character—quietly confident, deeply respectful, and always team-oriented.
Those who knew him best remember not only his natural ability with the bat, but also his calm leadership, resilience under pressure, and kindness off the field. Akshu carried himself with grace, letting his actions speak louder than words.
Education
Akshu began his primary education at St. John’s Girls’ School, Panadura. From Year 5 onwards, he was educated at St. Peter’s College, Colombo 04, a school renowned for producing outstanding sportsmen and leaders.
It was here that his cricketing talent truly flourished, and where he developed the values of discipline, teamwork, and respect that defined his life both on and off the field.

Akshu’s school cricket career was marked by consistent excellence and trusted leadership:
• Under 13 (2004) – College Cricket Captain
• Under 15 (2006)– College Cricket Captain
Western Province Cricket Captain
• Under 17 (2008) – College Cricket Captain

• Under 19 (2010) – College Vice-Captain
Played a decisive role in ending a 32-year wait by winning the Joe–Pete Big Match, while proudly playing in the Big Match for four consecutive years.
At every level, leadership came naturally to him—not merely because of talent, but because teammates trusted him and coaches relied on his maturity and sound decision-making. He led by example, trained relentlessly, respected the game, and stood firm during challenging moments.


Under 19 National Representation
Akshu reached the pinnacle of school-level cricket by representing Sri Lanka at Under 19 level, touring internationally and competing against the world’s best young cricketers.
One of the most defining moments of his career came during the 2010 ICC Under 19 World Cup, where Akshu emerged as the top scorer in the semi-final against Australia. This unforgettable innings reflected his composure, courage, and class on the global stage. It earned admiration from teammates, opponents, and cricket lovers alike, and remains etched in memory as a true symbol of his immense potential.
Club & Mercantile Cricket Career
Beyond school and national cricket, Akshu built an impressive nine-year career in club and mercantile cricket, balancing professional life with his passion for the game.
He represented several respected clubs, including:

• Ragama Sports Club
In mercantile cricket, Akshu proudly represented John Keells Holdings for nine years, earning respect as a dependable batsman and a thoughtful leader. Competing against seasoned cricketers sharpened his tactical understanding and reinforced his reputation as a player who could be trusted in critical situations.
During this period, Akshu followed a unique and demanding routine—playing six months in Sri Lanka and six months in England, representing clubs overseas. This exposure enriched his experience, strengthened his adaptability, and deepened his love for the game across cultures and conditions. Wherever he played—school, club, mercantile, or overseas—Akshu carried the same values: discipline, fairness, humility, and deep respect for the spirit of cricket.

Akshu’s life took a tragic turn following an accident that left him unconscious for seven years—a period marked by immense courage, patience, and unconditional love from his family. Even in silence, he continued to inspire, teaching profound lessons of endurance, faith, and unwavering love.
